Our Men

The information on this page and accompanying PDFs have been kindly provided by The Treasury in Thames. Further information and contributions are welcomed.

Men from the Thames-Coromandel District (TCDC) also played an important role in the New Zealand Tunnelling Company. Like their Waihi comrades, they willingly put up their hand to serve. Many of the men who enlisted from the TCDC area had been brought up in mining families on the Thames Goldfields and around the world. The search for gold on the Coromandel Peninsula had started at Coromandel in the 1850s, leading to the great gold rush of the Thames Goldfields in 1867.

To date over fifty members of the New Zealand Tunnelling Company, have been identified as having a connection to the Thames - Coromandel area. There will be many more who have family connections to the wider Thames area, for during the goldrush years of the late 1860s-70s, many immigrants called the Thames, their home.

The men listed below served from less than two weeks to over four years. Many suffered health problems as a result of their years mining and injuries received on the battlefields. Several died in battle or later as a result of war injuries and diseases. Sapper Ernest Davies of Coromandel, was killed in action in 1917 - a few short months after his arrival on the Western Front. Sapper George Everett Davies (Davis) of Thames was killed in action, a few days later. Lance Corporal Frederick George McClymont of Thames, had served for over two years when he received fatal injuries from a shell blast - he was awarded the Military Medal for acts of gallantry on the field. Another to die in action was Sergeant Claude Pownceby of Thames, who went missing while on a raiding party on 14th September 1916.

Each of these men have a story to tell, and any information from descendants would be appreciated. Men such as Sapper Alfonso Barrett of Coromandel was one of four brothers to serve in WWI, one of his brothers being killed in action. Sergeant Harry Dare of the Waiotahi Valley at Thames, was mentioned in despatches; while Captain R H Daldy received the Military Cross for his services.
